Training and skills development
Sierra Leone – Vocational training
Sound Seekers provided funding to enable the Sierra Leone National Association of the Deaf to run vocational workshops for young deaf adults who have missed out on an education because of the decade long civil war which raged in their country. With our assistance, young people in Freetown now learn new trades, such as tailoring, soap-making, hairdressing and carpentry – and have improved opportunities to overcome the poverty that is so prevalent all around them.
Audiology Maintenance Technology Course
Each year since 1991 Sound Seekers has run a five or six week Audiology Maintenance Technology (AMT) course for technicians from around the world. AMT provides the technical skills that enable the calibration, repair and maintenance of audiology equipment as well as the making of earmoulds and fitting of hearing aids.
To date 141 students from 25 countries have benefitted from the course’s training.
This intensive training course equips technicians with the specialist skills, experience and knowledge they need to enable them to:
- Calibrate and maintain equipment such as audiometers
- Make earmoulds and fit hearing aids
- Service hearing aids
These essential skills ensure that important equipment is effectively maintained.
Since 2003 the course has been based at the Kyambogo University, Kampala, Uganda. The course is attended by students from all over Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. If you want to find out more about this course and how to enrol, click here for more details.
