Cameroon 2009-2012

With a population of 18 million, Cameroon is one of the world’s poorest nations in terms of human development – 144th out of 177. The HARK mobile ear-care clinic and audiologists will visit rural villages and urban informal settlements on a regular basis. In doing this, those who need help and treatment, but who cannot afford and are unable to visit the few urban facilities, will have a service geared to their needs. The vehicle and staff will be based at the already established Kurume Health Centre in the village of Kurume, South West Cameroon. It will provide an audiology out-reach service that builds upon the expertise at the Royal Commonwealth Society’s Cameroon ear-care clinic, which is based at the Health Centre. As such, this HARK! project significantly develops the capacity of good, but limited, existing infrastructure, enabling it reach out across the country to geographically isolated communities.
