About us

Sound Seekers is dedicated to helping deaf children in the poorest communities of the developing world, by supporting projects that advance understanding of their needs and improve their access to health services, education, and social support, together with initiatives that enable children to avoid, or overcome, the effects of deafness and ear disease.

We work in partnership with local organisations and institutions to ensure we deliver appropriate, sustainable and cost-effective projects in the areas where they are most needed.

What we do

Delivering health care and support

One of the key services we deliver is HARK! (Hearing Assessment and Research Centre); mobile earcare clinics which deliver outreach audiology and ear disease treatment services in isolated poor communities.

Each of our HARK!s provides help to 4,000 – 10,000 people every year in their country of operation.

Prevention

We distribute mosquito nets and work with partner agencies to raise awareness of the dangers of malaria and other causes and to promote basic ear care.

Awareness

The main causes of deafness and hearing loss in the developing world are infectious diseases such as meningitis, malaria, lassa fever and measles. However there can be so little understanding about this locally that that  people can still believe witchcraft to be the cause of deafness. We work with deaf children, their parents and communities to teach them about ear care, hearing impairment and how deafness needn’t be an obstacle to integration.

Education and training

We help to provide schooling and education to deaf and hearing impaired children by funding building projects, providing materials and equipment, and overseeing projects.

We also provide training and create job opportunities through our AMT course, and for drivers, technicians, nurses and audiologists  from local communities in our HARK! teams.
